Summary

Myth

Seduced by Theseus , she helps him to escape from the labyrinth. Against the promise to marry her, she provides a thread that unwinds behind him to find his way. But after killing the Minotaur , the hero abandoned on the island of Naxos.

From there, the versions differ as regards the cause of the conduct of Theseus as the subsequent fate of Ariadne.

In one version, she finally left the island to follow the god Dionysus , who took him to Lemnos. She gave him several children Ceramos , Thoas , Oenopion , Eurymedon , Phli , Prparathos and Staphylos.

According to other traditions, she died of grief or was put to death at the request of Dionysus by Artemis , Naxos. This applies to Homer , taken by John Smith in his famous around (Phedre, I, 3):

"Ariadne, my sister, what love injured
You died at the edges where you were left! "

Another version has the abandonment of Ariadne as the obligation to cause a storm on the boat when Theseus there, have to leave to avoid losing the entire crew, this would be the forced abandonment because of the neglect of Theseus to change the sails of his ship. These should have been replaced by white if the hero had triumphed. A mist surrounds the boat and disturb the memory of Theseus, a punishment sent by the gods for his betrayal.

Aegean , father of the hero, awaits the return of the ship. On seeing the black sails, sign of mourning and failure against the Minotaur , he throws himself into the sea which now bears his name. So a hero mourning, despite his victory against the monster, Theseus returns to his kingdom.

A third version of mythographers oldest still claims that Theseus and Ariadne have found refuge on the island of Dia following a storm. Athena would have appeared to Theseus to Ariadne is promised to teach him to Dionysus, and therefore, he must renounce it. It's the broken heart that Theseus left Ariadne and forgets to change sails. Moreover, Aphrodite would have appeared to Ariane for comfort by telling him the news of her wedding nearby and wearing a crown of gold which subsequently changed into the constellation gods to please Dionysus. Hesiod ( Theogony ) adds that Ariadne was herself transported to heaven, Zeus made immortal having to gratify Dionysus. ("Golden-haired Dionysus, the blonde Ariadne, Minos's daughter, made his successful wife and the son of Cronos made her immortal, not subject to death and old age.") (Theogony, circa 947 / 950, translation by Annie Bonnaf).

In common parlance

Because of his ploy to help Theseus not to get lost in the labyrinth, Ariadne gave its name to " breadcrumb ", a common thread in the proper sense (in diving ) as the figurative (see example breadcrumb in Web design). Still with reference to this myth, the European rocket bearing his name.
