Amenhotep III leads the Egypt at the height of his power. This is not a warrior. During his long reign, one military expedition is attested in Nubia in year 5 of his reign, to quell a rebellion.

In Year 2 of his reign ( -1406 ), he married Tiy , which becomes the Great Royal Wife. For the occasion he commanded a series of large beetles whose back and tells the event that you find scattered throughout the empire.

The scribe of King Amenhotep son of Hapu , a favorite director of all the work of the King (royal architect) is a "prime minister" of fact. Mrymos became viceroy of Kush after Amenhotep.

During his reign Bakenkhonsou is high priest of Amun.

The end of his reign was marked by a deterioration in international politics. The princes Mitanni of Syria , Egypt, however, allies are attacked by a new power coming of Hatti , in the person of the Emperor of Hittites Soupilouliouma ( -1382 / -1342 ).

Amenhotep does not intervene to rescue them, despite appeals from the princes. Egypt, however, sign a treaty with the Hittites. The prince of Kadesh and the King of Amurru (Lebanon) intrigue to form a coalition of small states, again Amenhotep let them. These omissions will leave his son an empire or moved the disorder.

Economy and Society

Egypt, through the Nubian gold, is the leading financial power in the world. We are witnessing a development of major cities in Egypt, especially those who are royal residences ( Thebes , Memphis ).

The Shardanes , perhaps originating in Sardis , Asia Minor, are used as elite mercenary by Amenhotep III.

Arts, culture and religion

He undertook many initiatives to Nubia in northern Iraq. It is considerably larger complex of Karnak, built by making the temple of Luxor by its architect Amenhotep son of Hapu (which, as of Imhotep , the architect of Djoser , is deified posthumously). The elegance of architectural forms and proportions then peaked (columns floral fascicled in Luxor in particular).

He also built a huge castle of millions of years in front of Thebes which nothing remains today as the colossus called "Memnon".

There his reign a refinement of the forms of official art (sculpture, relief, painting).

The opening of the country continues under the reign of Amenhotep III and there is a syncretism between the gods of Egypt and Asia. The king of Mitanni, to Amenhotep sends the statue of the goddess Ishtar of Nineveh.

Sometimes regarded Amenhotep III is one of the initiators of Amarna art. He is the introducer of the religion of Aten , which will be followed by his son.

His grave is located in the valley of the monkeys , a wadi secondary valley of kings. Discovered in 1898, the earliest explorations of the valley, the shrine emptied of its treasures from the ancient world , has suffered greatly from the many visits and time. Parts of frescoes were also collected disfiguring the walls of the tomb. Few objects have survived the looting of some outside Oushebti exposed in various Egyptological museum in the world.
