The Altar of Augustan Peace is a monument of ancient Rome built by the Roman emperor Augustus in the year eight of the Julian calendar on the Champ de Mars.

Construction

On July 4 in 13 BC. BC , the Senate decided to build an altar dedicated to Pax Augusta in honor of the victorious return of Augustus. The latter returned from Spain and Gaul after three years of absence. During these three years he has conducted peacekeeping operations, and organized the southern provinces of Gaul.

The dedication is to say the solemn ceremony of consecration to the gods which marks the beginning of the operation of the building will take place only later, on January 30 in 9 BC. AD. The date is important because it is the birthday of the wife of Augustus , Livia : The dynastic aspect it is clearly stressed.

The monument has a rectangular enclosure with two doors on the east-west sides.


The altar is placed in the center:

  • The interior walls are decorated with garlands and bucranes.
  • The sides of the doors are decorated with reliefs telling the origin of Rome : the Lupercalia , the sacrifice of Aeneas , the personification of the Earth and Rome.
  • On the upper part of the two longest sides (no doors) shows a long procession led by Augustus and accompanied by Agrippa and Livia.
  • On the lower part of the four sides runs a frieze of spirals of acanthus leaves and small animals varied.
