Alicante was founded in -324 by the Greeks who gave the name of Akra Leuke (White Peak). In -201 it was taken by the Romans who changed its name to Lucentum.

There was no certainty on construction before that Amilcar Barca installed on the site a military building shortly before the Second Punic War. Hannibal would have landed his famous war elephants. The actual location of Lucentum was discussed but the origin of the modern city is not from the latter, the former Lucentum having been abandoned by either the public or absorbed by the new medina leqant, founded by the Arabs against now known as The Vilavella (Old Town).

Between 718 and 4 December 1248 the city belonged to the Arabs, who called it Medina or Al-Laqant Laqant (to link with the place name Valencian Alacant). During this period, the city followed the fate of Al-Andalus , and after the fall of the Caliphate of Cordoba it came under the domination of Denia and Murcia.

Under the Treaty Cazola (signed in Soria in 1179) between Alfonso VII of Castile and Alfonso II of Aragon , the southern border of Aragon was fixed on a line connecting Biar , Castalla , Jijona and Calpe. This meant that Alice lived in the expansion area of Castile. In 1243, the Muslim king of Murcia Muhammad ibn Hud (who depended theoretically region) signed the pact with the Infante Alfonso Alcaraz, who became Alfonso X of Castile - and put the kingdom of Murcia hudite under the protectorate Castilian. The Muslim governor of Alicante would accept this pact and not yet refused to submit to Castilian sovereignty, the city was finally taken militarily by Christians in 1248. Although since the beginning, people began to repopulate the city with Christians (mostly Castilian, Catalan and Aragonese), lack of Christians for the living and economic grounds favored the permanence of the Arab population.

In 1304 , after a war, Alicante is incorporated in the Kingdom of Aragon.

The city was besieged by the British in 1707 and then by the French in 1709 during the War of Spanish Succession and in 1812 during the Spanish war. Finally, she was besieged by the Federalists of Cartagena in 1873.

During the Spanish Civil War the city was on the Republican side and was bombed by German and Italian air forces. The largest attack was the bombing of the Central Market on 25 May 1938 , that killed over 300 people.

After the war Algeria , the city received a considerable number of Blackfoot , most descendants of former residents of the province who had migrated to Algeria at the beginning of the century. Since the 1960s the city has changed radically, and its population has increased significantly.

With the return of democracy, Alicante had a Socialist mayor, Jos Lus Lassaleta, the PSOE from 1979 to 1991, and Angel Luna, from 1991 to 1995. In 1995 elections were won by the right and the city is governed by Luis Daz Alper, the PP.

During these years the city increased its population and has surpassed the 300 000 inhabitants, has seen the creation of a Metropolitan train and expand its airport. In 1982 and 1997 , heavy flooding has greatly affected the city.

Geography

Location of Alicante in Valencia

Location of Alicante in Alacant

The city lies along the Mediterranean Sea , on a plain bounded by a series of hills and heights. Mount Benacantil with 169 meters high, crowned by the Santa Barbara Castle dominates the city and is the most characteristic image of Alicante. It also includes Tossal which is the San Fernando , La Chane de Sant Julian called Serra Grossa, the slopes of Garbinet Tossal and Manises. Between these reliefs, there are gullies and troughs , some completely obscured by urbanization as the ravines of Canicia, Good Hivern, or San Blas-Benalua.

Climate

The climate in Alicante

Alicante is a city with a Mediterranean climate with a temperature arid sustained throughout the year and sunshine. However, the rising or llevant tends to relativize the very mild climate.

The average temperature is 11 C in winter and 26 C in summer.

The rains are gathered over short periods, especially in September and October and cause flooding in particular due to the phenomenon known in the Levante in the sweet name of gota Fria, the "cold drop". This is, basically, the branch at 5000 meters in altitude between overly hot air, Mediterranean-type, and a pocket polar air from -25 C to -65 C degrees. It is in similar circumstances that occur typhoons. Arriving on the coast, because it usually forms over the sea, orographic change causes the breakdown of the storm front. The storm eventually "break" the atmosphere to produce heavy rainfall, sometimes catastrophic because of the concentration of rainfall.
