Aeolian Islands Italian) or Lipari islands named the main island, is an archipelago north of the volcanic Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

For over two centuries and still now, the islands are an ideal site for the study of volcanology and geology. They are on the list of World Heritage of Humanity established by UNESCO in 2000. It is a popular tourist destination which attracts over 200,000 visitors each year.

Geography

In total, this archipelago contains seventeen islands but only seven are inhabited. Only three islands are accessible to automobiles. All the islands are of volcanic origin but only Vulcano and Stromboli are still an active volcano.

The seven islands main inhabited the archipelago are:

  • Lipari , 10 554 inhabitants, the city of the same name ( Lipari ) is the capital. There are quarries of pumice ;
  • Salina , 2300 inhabitants, is the second largest island of the archipelago (27 km ). It derives its name from salt farms that were there;
  • Vulcano , 717 inhabitants, including the volcano (391 m) dormant since 1890 , emits fumaroles. Along the Wed , the baths of mud sulfurous relieve various ailments;
  • Stromboli , 420 inhabitants, with the famous volcano in major activity, the only of Europe with the Etna , apart from the volcanoes of Iceland;
  • Panarea , 280 inhabitants, is only 3.4 km ;
  • Filicudi , 250 inhabitants, has 6 extinct volcanoes;
  • Alicudi , 150 inhabitants, is the westernmost island of the archipelago.

History

Legend has it that Aeolus had colonized the archipelago during the Trojan War , another whether the fact of Italian south. We know for certain that the Greeks of Cnidus landed in 580 BC. AD with Pentathlon at their head.

A battle takes place between the fleets Roman and Carthaginian in -260. Rome lost the battle.

Under Mussolini , a camp for political prisoners was established on these islands.

The inclusion of the Aeolian Islands to the World Heritage of Unesco is threatened by urban development project of at least four new ports in the village of Lipari .
