  • African countries trade very little among themselves (3.4% of exports, 3% of imports) and remain deeply dependent on the Western capitalist countries (83.3% of exports, 74.2% of imports), especially Europe West (60.9% of exports, 55.9% of imports).

America

  • March 31 , Brazil : First demonstration Diretta J! to Abreu e Lima, Pernambuco.
    • The economic crisis was at its height in part because of faltering economic policies. The military is discredited. Divided, they face a huge popular mobilization on the theme Diretta J! (Direct elections at once!) While President Figueiredo chooses his successor. Moderates the PMDB could convince the left of the party to rally behind Tancredo Neves. Within the PDS (Partido Progressista), the party president Jose Sarney as the PFL ( Partido da Frente Liberal ) who refuses the candidate proposed by Figueiredo. The PFL and the PMDB are close to form the DA (Aliana Democrtica) to support the nomination of co-Neves Sarney. The launch duros threats, forcing Neves give guarantees that in case of victory, there would be no revenge (revanchismo).
  • April 27 : Ronald Reagan did vote in Congress on U.S. military assistance increased Salvador Salvadorans and encouraged to bring forward the date of presidential elections.
  • June - October : Events, concerts pans or protested against the power held in Chile.
  • July
    • The socialist regime of Nicaragua is plagued by guerrilla raids, the "Contras", who came from Honduras.
    • Commission Kissinger (bipartisan National Commission on Central America ) convened to consider the threats on U.S. interests in the region. She concluded that the origin of the crisis is to be found in poverty, injustice and political regimes unwilling to reform. But the Reagan administration retains the idea that the causes of the destabilization of democracies are carrying on a volatile situation made by forces hostile to Western values and receiving Soviet support.
  • August 10 , Chile : Augusto Pinochet appointed a civilian curator, Sergio Onofre Jarpa , the Ministry of Interior with the task of establishing a dialogue with the opposition.
  • September : Ecuadorian President Osvaldo Hurtado draws the attention of the ECLAC on the social and political consequences of the debt crisis. An initial conference is held under the auspices of the OAS in Caracas.
  • October 19 : Independence of St. Kitts and Nevis.
  • October 18 , Chile : A demonstration unit of any opposition gathers more than half a million people in Santiago, Chile.
  • October 25 : American Landing in Grenada , beset by serious political unrest. The intervention was condemned by the UN General Assembly.
  • October 30 : In Argentina , the beginning of the Presidency of Civil Raul Alfonsin after the dictatorship of Videla , who was elected president with a majority of votes. It restores democracy. It adopts a reasonable attitude to the military side, choosing to tell the truth about the "dirty war" and to do justice without vengeance, without attacking the military. He wants to be judged harshly the former leaders of the three juntas but we should show leniency vis--vis the performers. It creates a National Commission on Disappeared Persons ( CONADEP ) and entrusted the direction to the writer Ernesto Sabato.
  • The foreign debt of Uruguay has doubled since 1972.

28 - May 30 : Summit of the G-7 Williamsburg (Virginia)
  • January 15 : The birthday of Martin Luther King holiday becomes.
  • March 8 : In front of an audience of fundamentalist Protestants, Ronald Reagan denounced the Soviet Union as "the evil empire."
  • March 23 : Speech on National Security . To break the logic of "balance of terror", Reagan defense program launches, the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), dubbed by its detractors' Star Wars. " He would build a shield that would provide an impenetrable anti-nuclear "mutual assured survival," instead of "mutually assured destruction (MAD) of conventional deterrence. Critics argue that such a system is destabilizing technically inefficient and expensive, and it is likely to militarize space. Supporters of SDI notice that MAD is immoral and that because of the accuracy of the missiles, offensive forces are vulnerable to attack. By engaging in an arms race that involves high technology, Reagan hopes of breath USSR technically retarded.
  • March 25 : the first moonwalk of the "King of Pop" Michael Jackson for the 25th anniversary of Motown
  • July 1 : copper miners' strike of the company Phelps Dodge ( Arizona ) following a decrease in salaries, bonuses and security measures.
  • October 23 : In Lebanon , two suicide car bomb struck the French barracks (56 dead) and U.S. (239 dead).
  • October 26 : The United States Congress decides to stop the fast breeder reactor (FBR) to Clinch River.
  • First execution by intravenous injection to the United States.
  • 52% of women work outside the home.

Asia

  • Malaysia : Mahathir bin Mohammed twice opposed to hereditary sultans and managed to gain acceptance to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Council of Rulers of a limitation of their right of veto.
  • In Punjab , the Sikhs , who form 52% of the population, suffer a significant rise in unemployment. The Akali Dal , from a Sikh extremist sect that wants to establish a theocracy, has seen its audience grow. Indira Gandhi decided to divide the Akali Dal by promoting the extremist faction of Sikh nationalism, led by Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale , who claims the creation of a Sikh state, the Khalistan. The cycle of violence / repression caused 10 000 deaths since the early 1980's. The Akali Dal has new demands to the central government, whose refusal promotes the movement of Bhindranwale, who installs his militia near the Golden Temple at Amritsar. On October 5 , all passengers of a bus are massacred Hindu and the president's rule was proclaimed in the Punjab. Bhindranwale, although he is not indicted, decides to hide a weapon in the sacred precincts of the Golden Temple. The Akali Dal is trying in vain to regain control of the situation.
  • The restoration of the Buddhist temple of Borobudur ( Java ), begun in 1966 , is completed.

Middle East

Europe

October 29 : pacifist demonstration in The Hague , Netherlands during the Euro-missiles crisis
  • July 22 : The state of war is canceled in Poland after Pope's trip a success.
    • Demonstrations and arrests are increasing. Solidarity becomes a clandestine opposition movement, supported by the Catholic Church.
  • December : Euromissiles: Implementation in Italy , in Britain and Germany for 48 Pershing II and cruise missiles from 64 to rebalance the U.S. forces in Europe.
  • Economy:
    • Law of economic restructuring in Spain (Miguel Boyer, Minister of Economy): rigor and austerity (devaluation, job cuts at shipyards, steel, textiles, creating zones of urgent reindustrialization).
    • Italy: -0.2% growth. Restarting the Italian economy. Growth accelerates, inflation slowed, government deficits are being filled. The weight of the underground economy is important (20-30% of national income). The play is devalued by 2.5%.
    • Renewed growth in the United Kingdom. Dramatic decline in inflation. In 1983-1987, the annual price increase and 4.7%, the wages of 8.5%. Increased military spending, culminating in 1983-1984 with 5.4% of GDP.
    • Margaret Thatcher thundered against the agricultural policy of the EEC , which absorbs 70% of the budget and is unable to control a huge surplus.
